    Considering Moisture In Home Repairs

    July 23rd, 2012
Moisture is the cause of many types of problems when water is not properly led away from the home and builds up.  Water damage can lead to the need for many different types of Home Repairs if it is not taken care of in a timely fashion.  However, understanding how moisture affects the home structure can help prevent many of these potential problems so that costly and time consuming home repairs are unnecessary.
    Kinds of Moisture Damage

Mold and mildew are two of the most dreaded kinds of damage due to moisture.  Not only are these problems difficult to get rid of once they are present, but they can also cause and aggravate several kinds of health issues.  Those who suffer from asthma and other respiratory issues are very susceptible to these health effects from mold and mildew.  Furthermore, hiring a professional to get rid of all signs of mold and mildew can become very expensive as it can sometimes involve getting into walls.

Mold and mildew can also contribute to other kinds of moisture damage like rot.  Rot can be especially destructive to wooden homes since it can weaken the structure and cause problems like broken floorboards and even holes in the roof.  Of course, holes in the roof means there can be leakage, which can spread through other areas of the home even the basement.  Rot can mean more than the need for various home repairs as extensive damage can cause the actual structure to collapse.

    Preventing Moisture Damage
Fortunately, there are ways to prevent water and moisture from causing damage to the home.  Many people are not aware of the significance of gutters in the home.  Not only should the gutters be functional in effectively leading water away from the home, but they should also be cleaned on a regular basis so that they are not clogged.  Clogged gutters can hold sitting water and also become heavy and break away from its structure.
Yard maintenance can also go a long way toward helping prevent damage from moisture.  Trees and shrubs should be properly trimmed and pruned so that areas that tend to collect water can get access to the sun.  Sunlight can naturally evaporate water, so water will not build up near the home.  Not only will this diminish the chance for mold, mildew and rot, but it also helps keep unwanted pests like insects away from the home.
